The Story of Masteryear Publishing
Michael Pollock began playing piano for comedy improvisation in 1978. Through the years he developed rehearsal techniques for improvisors who sing, making up words and melody as they go. He has served as musical director and led rehearsals and workshops for many groups all over the U.S., working along the way with every level of performer, from beginners to the very best in the business.
This led to the creation of his first book and CD (Musical Improv
Comedy) - Michael had the book designed and printed according
to guidelines set out in a gift from his friend Christopher Colley
- Dan Poynter's
Self-Publishing Manual, How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book
As part of the process, Michael formed Masteryear Publishing.
Why the name?
Michael's longtime friend, the late Lotus Weinstock, introduced him to the concept that double-digit ages of life - 11, 22, 33 and so on - can be considered Master Years - years that present a special opportunity to make great personal progress by applying everything one has learned previously, and really aiming for the moon: an optimistic way to approach those birthdays and a good name for a publishing company!
Lucky Break!
As owner of Masteryear and author of its only book, Michael sent copies to numerous publishing houses and distributors; he also visited bookstores to see if on-site buyers might have an interest. At Samuel French Theatre and Film Bookshop in Los Angeles, he met book executive Gwen Feldman.
Gwen liked the look of "Musical Improv Comedy" and not only agreed to carry it at Samuel French, but made an immediate phone call to SCB Distributors and arranged a meeting for Michael! SCB represents many publishers who produce smart, fascinating books. The ensuing meeting was successful.
Michael decided to continue as an independent publisher and become a proud member of this eclectic family.
During the next few years Michael wrote more books, all of which are distributed worldwide by SCB. He and Christopher Colley now work together on making these unusual products known to target audiences everywhere.
